 Licensed Child Care Services

VSOCC Child Care Programs are licensed as “group child care” by the Community Care Facilities Licensing Board, and operate under the Provincial Child Care Facilities Regulations.

Our Curriculum & Program Planning

Children develop at his/her own rate. This means that no two children will learn a skill at the same time. Given this, our curriculum plans for each child’s development based on the skills that he/she is ready to learn.

Our staff plan a balance and variety of activities and experiences foster overall development and promotes the success of each child. Our curriculum…

  • Is based on appropriate developmental goals for your child and his/her learning needs
  • Reflects the interests of the children
  • Provides opportunities for your child to learn social, cognitive, physical, creative, emotional, language, and self-help skills

The following are the VSOCC standards for licensed childhood education programs:

1. Children are safe, healthy and learning.

2. Families:

  • Participate in the programs.
  • Contribute information and ideas to plans for their child’s care and learning.
  • Regularly receive information about their child.
  • Access information and workshops related to child development, parenting and support services available through VSOCC and the community.

3. School age programs:
  • Are inclusive, culturally sensitive and anti-biased.
  • Reflect best practice and current knowledge in the field.
  • Work together across programs and facilities to meet children’s needs.
  • Use knowledge of the skills each child has mastered and is learning to plan for individuals and the group of children.
  • Plan programs that are intentional and encourage active learning through play and exploration.
4. The program curriculum:
  • Is consistently implemented in all VSOCC programs.
  • Plans for the success of each child in transitions between programs and with the school system.
  • Is based on appropriate developmental goals for each child.
  • Plans for each child’s individual learning needs.
  • Plans for and reflects the interests of the group of children.
  • Provides regular opportunities for children to learn appropriate behaviours.
  • Provides regular opportunities for children to learn in the progra m and in the community.

Program activities include:

  • group times (ie. circle, story time, songs, felt stories, games)
  • sensory activities (i.e. water, sand, play-dough)
  • fine motor activities ( ie. puzzles, manipulative games and toys, blocks)
  • science and nature (ie. cooking, gardening, life studies and experiments)
  • language arts (ie. story telling, library areas)
  • creative arts (ie. music, movement, arts & crafts)
  • dramatic play
  • outdoor games and activities
  • community activities (ie. walks and fieldtrips
  • health and wellness activities

Our programs provide early childhood education and care, and strive to foster the development of the whole child—social, physical, intellectual, creative, and emotional areas. We encourage and support children’s natural curiosity and learning by

  • Providing children with a safe, healthy and nurturing environment which is inclusive of all developmental abilities, culturally sensitive and anti-biased.
  • Providing children with a variety of age-appropriate opportunities and activities.
  • Promoting a partnership between families and child care providers through open communication and respect.
  • Promoting partnerships, working collaboratively and liaising with community members and organizations.
  • Enhancing and improving quality of service through regular review, assessment and goal setting.

Infant and Toddler Programs

Infant programs are licensed for 12 children ages 3 months to 18 months

  • Young infants start by following a self paced schedule similar to the one which they have at home, though the schedule quickly changes as they grow and develop.
  • Staff observe the infants’ messages, interpret them and respond as consistently as possible.
  • We provide the infants with a many of opportunities indoors and outdoors to practice their new found skills and to experience a variety of sensory stimuli (sound, touch, sights, smells).
  • They will also experience regular outside time in the infant playground or on stroller walks in the neighbourhood.
  • Older infants will experience a more structured program and routines including short story times and beginning art activities.
Toddler programs are licensed for 12 or 16 children ages 18 months to 36 months.
  • The toddler routine is more structured with a variety of fun and flexible activities.
  • Indoor activities include free play (children choose between a variety of activities (i.e. play-dough, sand play), dress up, and other small motor activities), circle time (i.e. stories, songs and games) and gross motor play in the big room.
  • Outdoor activities include playground fun, and stroller walks to the park and neighbourhood.
  • The activities and equipment challenge the children and stimulate them to make sense of their environment.
  • They have opportunities to develop language skills, learn to share and build social relationships, and begin to develop self-help skills (i.e. toileting).
Infant/Toddler combined programs are licensed for 12 children ages 3 months to 36 months.

Preschooler Programs

Full day, group 3-5 programs are licensed for 25 children ages 30 months to school age.

Part-day Preschool programs are licensed for 20 children ages 30 months* to school age. (*limits apply)

Our goal in these programs is to help children further develop independence, and self help skills; increase cooperative, positive social interactions; as well as promoting the development of overall physical, creative, emotional and intellectual skills in preparation for entering school.

These programs are developed to promote learning through play and exploration. Our educators plan a curriculum which is balanced with free choice and structured activities.

Indoor activities include

  • Free play time where children have a choice of learning opportunities and activities (i.e. sand, play-dough, puzzles, manipulatives, arts & crafts, dress up).
  • Structured activities such as group circle activities (i.e. stories, songs), science, art, music and movement, and games.
  • Gross motor activities in big rooms.

Outdoor activities include

  • Walks and fieldtrips to parks and community resources (i.e. library), and games and activities in our outdoor playgrounds.

School Age Programs

These programs are licensed as “group child care” by the Community Care Facilities Licensing Board, and operate under the Provincial Child Care Facilities Regulations for children from Kindergarten age to 12 years old.

  • Kindercare Program (children enrolled in half-day Kindergarten)
  • Out of School Program (children enrolled in full day school, ages 5- 12 years)

Our programs are safe places for children to explore and learn through play. Our staff team plan and implement program activities, environment and curriculum based on the individual and group needs of the children and families. We foster the development of the whole child (social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional areas) by:

  • Providing children with a healthy, inclusive and safe environment,
  • Providing balanced, fun and stimulating activities that develop children’s curiosity and love for learning ,
  • Encouraging the development of independence and self help skills, and practicing cooperative and positive social interactions, Promoting a partnership between families and child care providers through open communication and respect.
  • Promoting partnerships, working collaboratively and liaising with the Vancouver School Board and other community members and organizations.
  • Enhancing and improving quality of service through regular review, assessment and goal setting.

These programs foster the development of a child’s cognitive, physical, language, emotional and social development. Our staff provides fun, safe and hands on activities. The program supports the physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development of the child through a curriculum based on age appropriate learning activities.

Indoor activities include science, math, art, drama, music, recreation, homework club, leadership and literacy. Outdoor activities include special field trips to community spots such as the pool, library and beach, as well as recreational activities in the school playground and other community parks. Both the indoor and outdoor activities will enable the children to master the skills needed to succeed in school and life

 Family Support Programs

VSOCC’s Family Place is a drop-in program for families with children under 6 years. Our goal in this program is to further develop the strengths and skills of families and their children by providing

  • networking opportunities for families to meet other families
  • opportunities for families to participate in quality, age and developmentally appropriate childhood activities
  • access to support, resources, training and information regarding the healthy development of children in the early years
  • access to information and links to other service providers
  • opportunities for children to play and explore activities such as arts and crafts, sand play, water play, play dough, puzzles and manipulatives; and
  • opportunities for children to interact and socialize with their peers in an informal group setting.

The program includes open-ended and age appropriate activities, story telling and singing and access to quality equipment and resources. This program encourages learning through play and exploration; and strives to increase cooperative, positive parent-child and peer interactions.

Family Support and Parenting Programs

VSOCC is committed to providing a variety of supports, resources and education opportunities for families. These parenting programs are developed and implemented to assist families to support and build their strengths and skills. Programs include parent workshops, literacy-based programs like the Mother Goose Program, and the Nobodys Perfect Parenting Program.

 The Vancouver Supported Child Development Program

Provided by the BC Centre for Ability www.centreforability.bc.ca
Provides families and care providers with practical information about specific disabilities and access to knowledgeable resources. A consultant is available to work with them to develop strategies for inclusion and to find suitable child care. We also assist child care programs that have children with extra support needs.  The Vancouver Child Care Resource and Referral Program

Provided by the Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre www.wstcoast.org
Provide information and services to individuals—including parents—who care for children ages birth to 12 years in the child’s own home or in the caregiver’s home. Services include newsletters, networking opportunities, workshops, consultations, home visits, lending library, and parent referrals. Tel: 604-718-6571
